Wow, you're brave. I would have passed these up because of all that rust! If you find a way to clean them, PLEASE post it! I'd love to know!!! :)
Visiting from southern hospitality. :)
Use steel wool and a steel grill brush to get in the crevices. looks like lots of elbow grease will be required for these buggers. once the heavy rust is off then scrub it with vegetable oil & salt. then wash it really good and coat it with vegetable oil, rubbing with a paper towel to season it. voila! like brand new.
:)
I f you have a grill put them in a hot fire. It will burn the mess off and then scrub with brush. Keep seasoning it with oil until it no longer disappers into the metal. I usually oil mine and keep it in the oven when I am cooking anything in there, if there's room. Good luck. By the way, you can use Pam to season them as well.
I always do this when I find a rusty cast iron treasure...
Scrub with soapy water and steel wool
Coat inside and out with cooking oil or thin layer of shortening and place in an oven set on 300 for about 3 hours. Let it cool, wipe it if any oil is left in bottom, place a paper towel inside to catch any moisture and store in a dry place. Hope this helps. My grandmother taught me this and it has never let me down.
OMG you have one hell of a job ahead of you. Get alot of steel wool, wire brush & heavy duty gloves to save your hands. Burn the hell out of them either on a grill or in a fire (like one for a camping fire which I use) let them burn for hours. Then scrub the hell out of it with a wire brush to get all the burnt yuck off it. While its hot! (But cool enough to pick with heavy duty gloves and balance the pans on the ground). When all the rust and gook is gone, Use soapy water and steel wool and scrub every inch of the pans. Dry with towel and then grease the hell out of them (solid crisco is the very very best) put a sheet tinfoil with sides folded up with some paper towels in it, under the pan on the next rack down . And make sure you grease it good! Inside, outside bottom, handles. Cook it for 3to 4 hours. Let it cool, wipe off excess. And since this will be the first time in like forever these pans have been cured...recoat with the crisco and recook them again! This is very very important! Each and every time you use your cast iron, never ever just hand dry them, either dry them on the stove top burner (which I do)or in the oven and wipe them down with crisco while the pan is still hot. Let it cool and wipe off excess. Never set cast iron inside each other when storing because they will make each other rust. If you do this you will have pans that are none stick and will last forever. I have cast iron pans that I am the 3rd generation to have! I have 15 pieces that are 75+ years old that have been used in my family and they are perfect! And cast iron are healthy because they will add iron in your food too. And like I said, I never have anything stick to my pots or pans.! Good luck!
I actually inherited from my great aunt and used sand paper and in some spots had to use my knife sharpening stone. Steel wool would not have cut through it BUT it was so totally worth it. Use that pot just about every day!
