Making a DIY father’s Day gift bag is so much easier than you probably think it is! You just need a few supplies and a little imagination to make a gift bag that dad will love. Then just drop in a special gift and give this cute gift bag to him this dad’s day.
This post was first published May 6, 2013, however, I am republishing with more information.
If you are looking for the perfect father’s day gift, start by making this gift bag! This is such a cute way to give something special to your dad. You can even get the kids involved!
Stuff this bag with all kinds of fun treats, like a candy tackle box, grilling items, pencil and pen holder, handmade frame, or other handmade gifts. Don’t forget the card!
How to Make a DIY Father’s Day Gift Bag
Supplies to make gift bags for dad:
- Fabric-covered brads
- Mini Glue Dots
- White paper lunch sacks
- Scrapbook paper (pick some that will look great as a bow tie)
- Cricut machine or circle cutting dies
- Letter stamps and ink
- Scissors
You can follow along with the card below for instructions on making these gift bags. You can also print the instructions if you would like.
First, begin by cutting a piece of scrapbook paper for your bowtie. It should be a rectangle shape – about 2 inches or so wide and not quite as long as the short side of your white paper bag.
Next, fold the piece of scrapbook paper in half and cut diagonally from one corner to another to create a triangle. Unfold the triangle and you should have a bowtie shape.
Use glue dots to attach it to the white paper bag.
Next, make the “buttons” for the bag. Add the brads down the center of the bag, punching the tabs through the bag (not all the way) and folding the tabs out from the inside of the bag.
I then used a few coordinating pieces of scrapbook paper and cut two concentric circles. On the top circle, I stamped a message for dad with letter stamps and ink. Adhere with glue dots!
I was so pleased I made a second version just for fun. I love these little shirt gift bags and they are so easy to make.
What a fun way to show dad you care this Father’s Day. Make him his own customized gift bag with these easy-to-follow instructions. Pick scrapbook paper he will love and be sure to add a saying that is perfect for your father.
These would be great for getting the kids involved in crafting as well. They are definitely easy enough for the kids to make. Let them cut and stamp away while you supervise the addition of the brads. So, what are you waiting for? Get started on your DIY Father’s Day gift bag today.

Ingredients
- Fabric-covered brads
- Mini Glue Dots
- White paper lunch sacks
- Scrap book paper
- Cricut machine or circle die cutter
- Stamps and ink
- Scissors
Instructions
- Cut a piece of scrapbook paper for your bow tie first. It should be about 2 inches or so wide and not quite as long as your white paper bag.
- Fold that piece in half and cut into a triangle but your cuts should not meet in the center.
- Then unfold and use Glue Dots to apply to your white paper lunch bag.
- Next grab your brads and put them down the center of the paper bag. Just punch the tab portion through the outside of the bag and fold out your tabs on the inside. I just eyeballed the location.
- I then used a few coordinating pieces of scrapbook paper and cut two concentric circles. On the top circle, I stamped a message for dad with letter stamps and ink.
- I then used Glue Dots to put the circles on the side of my “shirt” gift bag like a button. Then unfold your bag and it is ready to add a gift to the inside.
