What You Will Need

Instructions

  • If the item you want to do this technique on is already painted a dark color, you’re ready to begin. If it isn't, give your unfinished pieces a dark coat of paint.
  • After the undercoat is ready, rub a candle all over your project.
  • Next, apply a light color topcoat to your project right over the top of the candle wax. Apply as many coats of paint as you want.
Allow the paint to dry fully.
  • Use your blow dryer to heat up your project.
You may even notice some of the candle wax bubbling under the surface of the paint. That's normal! It will make the chippy paint effect look amazing.
  • Stick the tape to the surface, press down, and remove. This can be done quickly.
  • I applied a coat of Americana Décor Crème Wax in Golden Brown over my final projects then buffed it off with a cloth to add the final rustic vibe.

Notes

  • If you are using this method on furniture, work in small sections with the technique and repeat the steps over and over as you work across the surface.
  • Use a new piece of tape each time you do this part because you will lost adhesive strength when you remove the tape.
