I have a fabulous post today that takes two different ornaments and combines them together to make a truly unique piece. This deer head ornament takes a basic wood slice and adds an animal head to make a one-of-a-kind statement ornament. You can make this with a small premade 3D deer head or make your own with a craft laser.

Supplies needed
To make this deer head ornament you will need:
- Chalk paint in any color – I used Chalky Finish Paint in Everlasting
- Wood deer head ornament (or make your own see below)
- Wood slice ornament
- Floral wire
- Floral tape
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Gold tinsel ribbon
Make your own deer head
If you’d like to make your own deer head, you can use a Cricut Maker with heavy cardstock, chipboard or basswood with the Etsy file linked above. (Learn more about using the Cricut knife blade in this post.) If you have a craft laser (lucky you!), you can use the same Etsy file with your material of choice to cut the deer head.

Step 1: Add paint
Once you have your deer head put together, start by painting it with a couple of coats of chalk paint. For me, it looked amazing after adding two coats of paint. Be sure to remove the string and tag from the deer head before painting. Now lets turn him into an ornament.

Step 2: Attach deer head and add floral wire
Start by using hot glue to mount the deer head to the wood slice. Once that has dried, add some strong floral wire in a circle around the neck. Cut the wire to size and secure with a bit of floral tape.

Step 3: Add tinsel ribbon
Start wrapping and wrapping that tinsel ribbon around the floral wire. I went around my wreath about three times with this gorgeous gold tinsel.

Step 4: Finish the deer head ornament
You are ready to hang this one on your tree using the string that is already through the wood slice.

I think the deer head ornament looks a bit regal and glamorous with a gold wreath around his neck! Keep this for your own tree or gift it to someone who loves the outdoors; you could even use a paint pen to personalize it on the back of the wood slice.
