How To Make Paper Rockets With Straws
Now that you have your free printable, you can make your straw rockets with your kids. Follow along with the tutorial below for instructions!
Supplies Needed To Make Straw Rockets
- Paper
- Printer
- Scissors
- Two straws (one that can fit inside of the other)
- Tape
- Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
- Free printable (see how to download above)
Step 1: Print The File & Gather Up Supplies
Print the free printable file and gather up your other supplies.
Step 2: Color Rockets
Let your kids color their rockets with anything you have on hand.
Step 3: Cut Out Rockets
Cut all of the rockets out with scissors. Older kids can do this step themselves.
Step 4: Cut Large Straws
Cut the larger straw to fit on the back of the rocket.
Step 5: Tape Straws Closed
Tape one end of these tubes closed.
Step 6: Tape The Straw To The Rocket
Tape the straw piece to the back of one of the paper rockets.
Step 7: Add A Second Rocket
Add the second rocket on top with additional tape.
Step 8: Add Smaller Straw To Rocket
Add in your smaller straw, and your rocket is ready to play!
You can make as many or as few of these as you like. I used the straws I had on hand, but you can also customize this with straws that have different decorations.
Then let the kids blow on the smaller straw and watch the rocket shoot off the top. Use this as a lesson by allowing the kids to alter the rocket itself and even the straws. Can they come up with a way to make the rocket lighter? Make it go further? Make it go higher? Let their imaginations take over!

An art project that is also a lesson is a great way to get the kids motivated to learn. For older kids, turn this into a competition. Who can make the best rocket? Whose will fly higher? They are sure to come up with all sorts of ways to improve upon this simple kids’ craft.

FAQs About Straw Rockets
Here are a couple of questions that I see readers ask about these straw rockets. If you have a question, please check to see if I’ve already answered it below. Don’t see your question? Leave it for me in the comments!
What Printer Would You Recommend For Printables In General?
I love using this printer!
Do I Need To Use A Special Paper For This Project?
Technically, no. I like using white cardstock because it’s thicker paper, but you could use plain copy paper instead.
Do I Need To Use Colored Pencils To Color These Straw Rockets?
No, you can use crayons or markers to color your rockets!
Can I Glue The Straw To The Rockets?
You can, but I wouldn’t recommend it. This is because, if you decide to use glue, you will have to wait for it to dry. By using tape, you can create the project faster and avoid any mess caused by the glue.
