Supplies Needed To Make Handprint Flowers
- Watering Can
- Craft paint in the colors of your choice
- Paint brushes
- Spray sealer if kept outdoors
Step 1: Paint Your Little One’s Hand & Press It Onto The Watering Can
This is such an easy craft and can be done with toddlers and infants. We all know that working with young children can be tricky, so keep your patience in mind and maybe a little bribery with a small treat at the end.
First, add the handprints to the side of your watering can by painting their hands with the paint.
Here are a few tips for working with infants and toddlers with this step:
- Add the paint to their hand using a paintbrush.
- Guide their hand into place and press it down well.
- Make sure to get their fingers as well as their palm pressed down well.
- For small infants, you can do this while they are asleep as well.
Step 2: Paint On Stems & Leaves
Allow the handprints to dry (and give those kids a reward!). Then, use a paintbrush to add stems and leaves to your handprint flowers. You can allow older children to paint these on themselves if desired.
Step 3: Add Child’s Name & Year
Be sure to add the name and year so your treasured memento will be a reminder of the year for a long, long time. Use a pointed brush to accomplish this task.
Step 4: Add Protective Coat (Optional)
If your watering can will be left outside for storage, you will also want to add a spray sealer to the surface. If you are going to use and display indoors, that step is probably not required, but it can add an extra layer of protection from chipping.

Be sure to grab your supplies and add some handprint flowers to a watering can for a great gift idea.
Mom will treasure this one for a long, long time! And those handprints are so precious!
Tips and Tricks for Handprint Flowers On A Watering Can
Now that you’ve seen these fun handprint flowers on a watering can, are you ready to make your own? Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure your project goes as smoothly as possible!
- Cover Your Work Surface – Since we are working with paint and little ones, there is always the possibility that a painted handprint might end up on your table. Due to that, you may want to cover up your work surface with some paper, a mat, or even a Dollar Tree tablecloth that you can throw away later.
- Have Fun With Colors – I chose to go with a green watering can with pink and purple handprint flowers. However, you can choose any colors that you like for this project!
- Decorate Both Sides Of Your Watering Can – You can decorate both sides of the watering can to give you more space to place handprints. This is great whether you have one child or multiple children!
- Have A Wet Wipe Handy – Once your children are done painting, make sure you have a wet wipe to clean your little ones’ hands.
