How To Makeover Dollar Store Bins
Between craft supplies, school stuff, and regular household clutter, getting organized is always a battle. Plus, it gets really expensive.
It's pretty well accepted that dollar stores are the place to go for budget-friendly organizing solutions. I've organized several areas of my home, including my jewelry, refrigerator, and more, with containers, bowls, and trays all from the dollar store! All you need is a little spray paint and a plan!
Supplies Needed To Makeover Dollar Store Bins
- Plastic containers from the dollar store
- Spray paint color of your choice – make sure it can be used on plastic!
NOTE: I used white spray paint as a base coat and metallic silver to finish the job and achieve the look I wanted. You can use any color that you want for your home. Just be sure to buy a good-quality spray paint that states it can be used on plastic on the label.

Step 1: Clean Dollar Store Bins
Be sure to clean each bin and remove any labels or stickers before painting.
Step 2: Spray Paint Bins White
Head outside to spray your bins. Start with a coat of white spray paint if you are covering up a darker color. I sprayed my bins, inside and out, to give them a more finished look.
Allow the bins to dry according to the label instructions between coats. It took me two coats of white to cover up that red.

Step 3: Spray Paint Bins The Color Of Your Choice
Then I used metallic spray paint on the inside and outside to finish the bins. It took me a couple of coats to get good coverage as well.
Once you are happy with how your bins look, allow them to dry and cure for at least 24 – 48 hours. This ensures that the spray paint has cured and is ready for the contents that you are going to add!

I put my bins into one of those cube organizers and filled them with bathroom items. You can use this idea in any room of your home that needs some affordable organization.

I also added a few large farmhouse-style baskets to this bathroom. I love this area now, and it fits my style perfectly.

It is amazing what a little spray paint and time can do! Head to your dollar store to pick up some bins, and try this one for yourself. You too can makeover dollar store bins for pretty organization!
Tips and Tricks for Dollar Store Bins
Now that you’ve seen these dollar store bins, are you ready to make your own? Here are a few tips and tricks!
- Buy Your Favorite Bins – The Dollar Tree sells a variety of bins in different shapes and sizes for this project! So, don't feel like you have to find these exact bins. Instead, buy what you love and what will fit in your space.
- Buy Good-Quality Spray Paint – Since the Dollar Tree bins will be fairly cheap, spend the rest of your budget on good-quality spray paint! This is because you will want to use a spray paint that states on the label that it can be used on plastic.
- Add A Sealer- If you want your spray-painted bins to have extra protection, you can add a sealer. I chose not to because I knew these bins wouldn't get too much wear and tear. However, you can add a sealer after step 3, if you wish.
- Add A Label – If you would like to add a label to your bin but don't know where to start, check out our labeling tutorials below!

Good idea! I often see bins/baskets at the dollar tree that I don’t buy because they are lime green or a crazy orange. Now I will buy and paint!

Hard to get thru the post for all the advertising
The white bins go with everything. I have plenty to do without “making” work for myself.
That’s the great thing about projects like this. It can help people turn something inexpensive or maybe something they already own that doesn’t match their current space into something that does 🙂
