For the Love of Books Bathroom -- the details

Head on over to So You Think You're Crafty and vote for my Love Sign Knock Off if you haven't already.  The last day is tomorrow and the voting is close!!
Last week the theme on SYTYC was Children's Literature.  I submitted my For the Love of Books Kids' Bathroom.  Here are all the details in case you want to copy any of the items I used....

We will start with this wall grouping.  The frames are a hodge podge of ones I owned and ones I purchased at the thrift store.  I picked a color scheme and started painting the frames in a variety of colors.  The picture "mats" are all scrap book paper that I had on hand.  All of the vinyl quotes for this entire room I cut with my Silhouette.

I tried to incorporate a variety of my kids' favorite books.  Some classic and some newer titles.  I started by scouring the net and pinterest for any printable book quotes and pages.  I also stalked the thrift store.  I did not want to tear any pages out of the books we owned and loved to read.

The above Dr. Seuss picture and quote came from 364 Quotes in 2011.  I picked this particular version because I adore having the cat in the hat on it!  If you search around, that quote is available in tons of options.

The above printable came from my friend Michelle on The Scrap Shoppe.  She even has it in different colors if you want another version.  I fell in the love with the colored version.  I also added quite a few other elements to the bathroom to remind my kids to read...

This was a thrift store sign from the 80s.  I painted over it in that pale yellow.  Then covered up with the letters R E A D and painted a dark grey around them.

My oldest daughter loved pooh when she was little...okay so she still does at almost 18!  So I could not leave him out.  The above picture was found on pinterest but alas had no original source.  I did not find a source but here is my pin if that helps.

Last but not least is a page out of a beloved book.  My son LOVES this book!  I picked up another copy at the thrift store and used it for my framing.  The book is called Easy Street in case you are interested.  Next up is the bathroom shelf...

Again lots of framed book pages.  I had to include Arther....

Plus more Winnie the Pooh (he has the best quotes).  Some starfish and some kiddo painting also got added to the shelf...

Oh yes, I also added READ to a little container in scrabble letters.  Scrabble letters definitely belong in a book themed bathroom, don't you think?

For this little arrangement, I stole a page from a Corduroy book and added some vinyl to the wall...

Why yes I do have a chest of drawers in the bathroom!  This lovely jewel actually holds all my tablecloths, linens and things.  I don't have a place in the kitchen and this works just fine.

I took a Mickey Mouse book from the thrift store and made myself a runner for the chest of drawers.  Just torn out pages and tape.  Absolutely nothing fancy but it is oh so cute...

The towel holder that I spray painted ended up on this chest of drawers.  A few book stacks and some beach themed accessories...

See that old Horton Hears a Who book??  That one was in the free box at the thrift store.  They were going to RECYCLE it!!  Seriously.  They throw out vintage books that are not in the best condition.  I rescue as many as I can....but it is hard....

That is all for my bathroom tour.  I hope you enjoy my bathroom redo as much as we do!  It is a great improvement.  So bright and cheerful now!  Plus, I hope it encourages the love of reading to continue to blossom in my kids...

Love of Books Bathroom -- I need YOUR vote!

This week's theme over at So You Think You're Crafty is Children's Literature.  We are a book loving household and I really wanted to use all of my kids' favorite books in a project.  Which meant it needed to be a pretty big project!  So I made my "For the Love Of Books" kids' bathroom.  I took some classics, some favorites, and some that I personally just love.  They all became decor in the upstairs kids bath.  And my bathroom needs YOUR vote!!  So pretty please head on over and vote for me!!  More details on the bathroom next week but here is a peak...

I added in some wall vinyl and some inspirational Dr. Seuss prints.  Plus I took every opportunity to reinforce the love of reading in our house.  Each picture holds a special memory for me and the kids.  There are books that reflect each child at different stages of their childhood.  It is like a trip down memory lane.

Now don't freak out.  I did not rip up any of our beloved childhood favorites.  I either printed the images from the net or bought used books from the thrift store for this project.  One of those thrift store books became a runner for the dresser I have in the room.  Books mixed with some beach themed accessories to create a lovely bathroom for kids of all ages.

I hope you enjoy this room as much as I do.  I hope to add favorites to the collection over time and as the kids grow.  It keeps the lovely memory of favorite books alive in our house.  Which in turn, I hope, will keep the love of books alive!
Again -- please head on over and VOTE!

A little antique brass spray paint and it is ready to go!

Striped Curtains with Decoart

I am about to show y'all a room that has never before been seen on this blog.  The kid's bathroom has really been the same old, same old for years.  I have decided to give it a little makeover with some new accessories.  First up was curtains.  I may be the only human being you know with 5 windows in her bathroom....FIVE!  One hint:  if you are looking at building a house with five windows in the bathroom...don't.  It is cold!  I had valances up on those windows.  I have been dreaming of floor length curtains for sometime.  My hope is that they will keep some of that cold air out this winter.  But five windows with floor length curtains is a BUNCH of fabric.  I finally had a brainstorm...sheets.  I had enough white sheets to make curtains for the windows for FREE!  But plain white sheets for curtains??  So I decided to paint on some stripes....

I am going a little bit bold in here.  So I went with a dark charcoal grey on the bottom with a couple of shades of green on the top.  And yes...great big clawfoot tub and 5 huge windows...in a bathroom people...on the second floor!  That view so could have been better used with a different room!  But that is a topic for another time -- aka "How I would layout my house in a dream world".  Now for my before and after....

Oh so lovely!  I literally laid out my stripes with a ruler and paint brush...marking the lines.  They are all different sizes.  I went with 3 inches on the bottom, 4 inches in the middle, and about 2 inches on top.  I used Decoart paint with their fabric medium.

The fabric medium really made the paint thin and oh so easy to apply to the curtains.  I was going for 6 stripes.  But gosh...after sitting on the floor for 4 to 5 hours doing three on each of the five curtains....I was done!

Partway through I was not entirely sure I liked the look.  Yes after 3 hours on the floor, I was unsure.  Aack!  I decided to finish them all, hang them, and then decide.  Once they were all up there I was smitten!  Hooray for perseverance!
Stay tuned as I have BIG plans for this room!  You won't want to miss this one.  {Well as long as it turns out as well as it looks in my head.}  The jury is still out on whether or not this is going to make this room any warmer.  But heck, for the cost of a little paint and a little backache, I am willing to chance it!

Thrifty Finds -- Faux Coral!!

Thrifty faux coral??  Oh yes!!  I found a source!!  I am in love with my thrifty find this week...faux coral...
I added it to the shelf in my bathroom after I brought it home...
What did I pay??  $4!!  Yep is was in the 50% off clearance section of my local Big Lots!!  $4 was a BARGAIN!!
Now the front had these odd seashell shapes on it.  My first instinct was that spray paint would hide those nicely.
But then...I turned it around backwards...oh yes!!  It was gorgeous!!
So all that was left was to put it on the shelf...now that is one easy project!!
The faux coral just adds to the beachy feel of this bathroom shelf....
I have been searching and searching for a piece like this and am thrilled to find it at such a great price!!
What did you find this week?
And did you enter the giveaway from Ugly Sofa??  Enter to win your own slipcover!!

Beach Theme Home Decor for the Bathroom

The upstairs bathroom needed some beachy touches!  And well I love starfish home decor in a bathroom!  Why do I feel the need to put shells in every bathroom??  I dunno.  But I do!  So I revamped my shelf display in the bathroom with some coastal decor!
Finger starfish, apothecary jars full of shells, driftwood...all the touches of beach living....all in my bathroom!
Driftwood is slowly stealing my heart away from starfish!  I mean look at the detail...
And in most rooms I add a meaningful touch or two.  The flower pot my 16 year old made in pre-school and she bought me that little picture with her own money many, many years ago.  Memories are priceless so display them with pride!
The apothecary jars I have been thrifting over time.  I am sure I did not pay over $1 for any of them.  And the shape is so similar on them all, it is like they are a matching set from the store!
Full of odd shells that were also thrifted...it is budget friendly and gorgeous!
It took me a while to get all the things in my collection, but only a few minutes to put them together on the white beadboard shelf.  Beach decor just in time for this southern heat wave!
So do you feel the need to add shells next to your bathroom sink?  Please tell me I am not the only one with starfish bathrooms!

Footstool Slipcover -- From Drab to Fab

Did y'all see my stool on the CSI Project??  I am absolutely in love with this little project!!  All plastic foot stools need to look out...I am on the rampage now!

I started with this blue footstool we have had for many, many years.  It has seen a ton of tooth paste! :)

Let's cover it up and make it pretty!  I grabbed some canvas drop cloth, chair webbing, and my trusty tan ticking.  I heart that burlap chair webbing...like I dream about it at night!  I get it at Wal-mart in the trim by the yard section.  My Wal-mart only has the red version but I have seen other colors floating around.

Let's get to sewing!  I cut my webbing to length using my stool as a guide.  Then sewed the ends together...

See...great fit...

I then used my stool to tear a piece of my canvas drop cloth to size.

One step I did not do that I think would make this easier for y'all -- pin each corner into place on the webbing.  That way if you get to the corners and have extra fabric you can pleat each one.  I just sewed mine all at once and the last corner was slightly off.  I can live with it...but a warning for those of you that can't.

Next take your ticking and again use your stool to measure.  I made mine long enough to touch the floor.  Don't forget to give yourself enough for a seam allowance.  Now I sew my ruffles free hand.  I just fold over some fabric every now and again.  You can pin if you want.  I am anti-pinning.  Don't judge.  I don't sew correctly I just get it done! :)  Now instead of measuring the amount I needed to go all the way around.  Just leave some extra when you start.  And after you pleat the entire way around...stop sewing before you get to the end.  Cut off the end even with your start piece and sew them together at that point.  Then finish up sewing it to the webbing.  See no measuring and no pinning -- I am a rebel.
That little pleated skirt allows for the pockets, etc on the sides to be hidden also...pure love...
Looks soooo much better!  And you will notice I did not hem the bottom of my skirt.  If you are not into shabby, go ahead and hem it.  Me?  I love shabby so that frayed edge will blend in with the rest of my home!  And for me, frayed edges and burlap ribbon go together like peas and carrots!
Here is the great before and after comparison for y'all....
Amazing right??  A little fabric, a little sewing, a new stool...

The perfect addition to my bathroom!
